1 Ellen (Nellie) Dean: She is a major narrator of the story and shapes our view of the other characters. She also is significantly involved in the plot.

2 Catherine Earnshaw: She is the major love interest of both Heathcliff and Linton and very much at the enter of the story.

3 Heathcliff: Another obvious choice.

4 Catherine Linton: Daughter of Cathy and Edgar and in a sense a double to her mother. Her relationship with Hareton is part of the plot resolution.

5 Edgar Linton: The third member of the Cathy-Heathcliff love triangle. Married to Cathy, and in many ways an emblem of goodness that because it is weak in ineffective.

1 Mr. Lockwood: Important as a narrator.

2 Hareton Earnshaw: Part of the second love triangle and the plot resolution.
