Via initially does not want Auggie to come to her play because she does not want her friends at her school to see her brother. Via needed the chance to find out who she was outside of being Auggie's sister. Via enjoys having the opportunity to reinvent herself and is not ready to bring Auggie into her school world. That all changed when their dog Daisy gets sick.

Shortly after Auggie's outburst at the dinner table, Via rushes into his room to find him. At this point in the story, Via is still not ready to fix things with Auggie. She has been directed to bring Auggie out to say goodbye to Daisy.

Via and Auggie say their goodbyes to Daisy, place the dog toys on the coffee table, and spend time talking about what a good dog Daisy has been. Via mentions that Daisy has been sick and they never should have let it get this bad. Auggie is surprised by this comment and asks her what she means. I think that Auggie's lack of awareness regarding Daisy's worsening health helps change Via's perspective about what is really important. Via realizes that Auggie is caught up in his own worries, which helps her change her mind about Auggie coming to her play. The unexpected loss of their dog allowed Auggie and Via to mend their relationship.
