After Auggie overhears Jack make several disparaging remarks about him during the school's Halloween party, Auggie stops speaking to him, and Jack begins to distance himself from his former friend. Eventually, Summer gives Jack a clue as to why Auggie is acting aloof, and Jack experiences a significant amount of regret and remorse for his actions when he realizes that Auggie was the person wearing the Bleeding Scream mask. In science class, Ms. Rubin makes Auggie and Jack partners for their upcoming project, and Jack is nervous to work with Auggie. After Jack loses his temper and punches Julian, he ends up apologizing to Auggie, and the two boys become friends again.
Jack is thankful that Auggie is his partner because Auggie excels at school, and Jack struggles in science class without his help. When Jack visits Auggie's home to work on their science project, he is impressed by Auggie's video game collection and brand-new computer. Although Jack is distracted, Auggie remains focused on their project and suggests that they build an organic battery made out of potatoes, which can power a lamp. Auggie tells Jack that they can name their creation a "Spud Lamp" and present it during the science fair in the gym. The boys manage to build the "Spud Lamp" on their own and earn an A on their project.
