Student Question
Why should Kit have moved to Barbados in The Witch of Blackbird Pond?
Quick answer:
Kit should have considered returning to Barbados in "The Witch of Blackbird Pond" when she faced accusations of witchcraft and the danger of a mob. Staying in Connecticut initially seemed necessary to care for her ill cousin Mercy. However, once Mercy recovered and Kit's name was cleared, returning to Barbados might have spared her the ordeal. Ultimately, Kit does return to Barbados, suggesting it was a better choice for her well-being.
In the novel The Witch of Blackbird Pond, Kit is originally living
in Barbados but has to move to Wethersfield, Connecticut after the death of her
grandfather and an attempt by an unsavory and elderly man to marry her. The
action of the novel takes place almost entirely after Kit has left her original
home of Barbados.
Later in the story, there is an instance where Kit is saving Hanna from a mob
that believes she is responsible for an illness that is sweeping the town. As
Kit and Hanna are fleeing, they encounter the Dolphin, the very ship
that brought them from Barbados. Nat, the captain's son, offers to take them on
board once again. Kit, however, stays to take care of her cousin, Mercy, who is
gravely ill.
It is here that it might have been wiser to go back to Barbados, as Kit
immediately after finds that Mercy's fever has broken and the town is accusing
her of witchcraft. But after Nat returns, Kit's name is cleared, and she soon
returns to Barbados all the same.
