Student Question
Describe an ethical decision made by a character in The Witch of Blackbird Pond in the book's first half.
Quick answer:
Kit makes an ethical decision to jump overboard to rescue a child's doll, despite it being seen as inappropriate behavior for women at the time. Her impulsive action, driven partly by anger, leads to accusations of witchcraft since swimming was associated with witchcraft. This decision has significant consequences, including affecting her relationship with Nat, who is upset by her actions. Conversely, Goodwife Cruff's unethical decision to accuse Kit of witchcraft stems from personal dislike and a desire to discredit Kit's influence on Prudence.
The first ethical decision Kit makes is to jump overboard to rescue the child’s doll on page 8. This decision seems easy enough at first. The child drops the doll, and Kit dives in to retrieve it.
If we read carefully, we see that Kit actually jumps in mostly out of anger at not being listened to when she asks the captain to turn back. If someone had listened to her, she might have stopped to consider her actions. As it was, she condemns herself early because swimming was not considered appropriate behavior, and the colonists assume that any woman who can swim is a witch.
Although she does a nice thing for the child, Kit's temper gets her in trouble. She does not think about others, especially how Nat will react. He jumps in to save her, and is angry when he learns she can swim. This event thus has far-reaching effects for both of them.
Describe an unethical decision in the last part of The Witch of Blackbird Pond.
I think that Goodwife Cruff’s decision to accuse Kit of witchcraft was unethical. It seems clear that Goodwife Cruff does not like Kit because of the interest she has shown in Prudence. Goodwife Cruff does not behave ethically toward Prudence either. She does not love her and try to teach her. She instead assumes she is stupid. When Kit teaches Prudence to read, it disproves Goodwife Cruff’s theories about Prudence and makes her look bad. So she accuses Kit of being a witch to refocus the attention, discredit Kit, and prove that Prudence is as stupid as she thinks.
