Dexter soon confronts the harsh reality of the dazzling world he has joined. This truth is embodied by Judy Jones, who represents his dreams of achievement and joy. Despite her allure and liveliness, Judy's superficiality and harmful tendencies soon become apparent.

Judy's primary aim is to satisfy her own desires, with little concern for those she hurts along the way. She quickly becomes bored with one suitor, replacing him with another, while keeping the former around for future convenience. When she notices a suitor's waning interest, she reels him back in with promises of fidelity, only to abandon him once more. Dexter falls into this harmful pattern after concluding that she has made him "magnificently attune[d] to life," imagining her world as "radiating a brightness and a glamour he might never know again." Upon entering her world, both he and the woman to whom he briefly becomes engaged endure deep sorrow and disillusionment.
