Now in London, Milly and Mrs. Stringham dine at Lancaster Gate with Mrs. Lowder. Among the other guests are Kate Croy and Lord Mark. Milly is a bit overwhelmed to be in such sophisticated company. She talks specifically with Lord Mark, although she is not quite sure what to make of him. She is not sure whether he is the most intellectual person she has met or the most frivolous. She is impressed with Mrs. Lowder’s fidelity to Mrs. Stringham, although the former has not been in contact with her for years and has moved far ahead of the latter socially.
