Bee Branch is the protagonist of Where'd You Go, Bernadette. Bee gathers all types of correspondence relating to the disappearance of her mother, including emails, letters, and transcripts. She traces the event of her mother's disappearance back to a perfect report card, which Bee used as leverage to gain her parents' consent to a trip to Antarctica.
Bernadette Fox is Bee's mother. She is an architect who suffers from agoraphobia and seldom leaves the house. This may be due to a traumatic experience in which the buyer of an award-winning home she designed had it demolished. Due to her reclusive nature, she frequently feuds with the other parents at Bee's school. One night, during an intervention meant to save her from a Russian scamming ring, she disappears to the bathroom and is not seen again.
Other characters include Audrey, Bernadette's neighbor with whom she constantly fights; Elgin, Bee's father and a genius working at Microsoft; and Soo-Lin, one of Audrey's friends, who begins a regrettable affair with Elgin, leading to an unwanted pregnancy.
