In this quest, Francis must reject his provincial origins for European worldiness. In his final return to Canada, however, Francis may represent the shaping of a national consciousness, the process by which Canadians give form to their own unique identity. In this case, however, the means of self-discovery are embedded in an artistic sensibility, and here, as elsewhere in his work, Davies demonstrates how form and meaning in life are gained through the process of artistic creation.
