The Westing Game is a 1979 mystery novel written by American children's writer and illustrator Ellen Raskin. In it, sixteen people are invited to attend the reading of the will of the recently deceased eccentric millionaire Samuel W. Westing. Soon, they discover that the will is actually a game, and whoever beats it will inherit two hundred million dollars. Judge Josie-Jo Ford is an intelligent woman who partners with Sandy McSouthers in order to find the clues to win the game. Ford's plan is to basically do a background check on all of the players—although, for some reason, she does not check Sandy. Judge Ford wishes to know how many of the players who were tenants in Mr. Westing's building have actually met Sam Westing, and this is the question she writes on the paper.
