Student Question

What are the heirs trying to do during the snowstorm in The Westing Game?

Quick answer:

During the snowstorm, the heirs in "The Westing Game" work on solving their clues to unravel the mystery of the game. They are grouped into pairs, plotting and problem-solving in secrecy. Some, like Turtle, take advantage of the situation, selling candles when the power goes out. Not all pairs collaborate effectively; for instance, Jake Wexler isolates himself after arguing with Grace, and Madame Hoo feels excluded as she watches the snow.

During the snowstorm, the heirs work on their clues to try to solve the mystery of the Westing Game.

During the snowstorm, the inhabitants of Sunset Towers are “huddled in plotting, problem-solving pairs.”  When the power goes off, Turtle takes advantage of the situation by selling her candles door to door at seven in the morning.

Clues, they had to work on the clues.  Behind closed doors.  Whisper, someone may be listening. (ch 8, p. 47)

Not all the pairs work together.  Jake Wexler barricades himself in his office after having a fight with Grace.  Denton is at work, and Sandy is at home.  No one knows where Otis and Crow might be, and Madame Hoo is just staring out the window because no one ever includes her.
