Strange as it may seem—and pretty much everything is strange in The Westing Game—Chris is positively tickled pink at the prospect of being kidnapped by his playing partner Dr. Deere. Why? Because he knows he'll be thrilled by all the attention. Truth be told, Chris is having the time of his life, and being kidnapped by Dr. Deere will make the whole experience of The Westing Game just that little bit more exciting.

Chris also senses that Dr. Deere, despite his rather forbidding exterior, is actually quite a kind man. The good doctor shows his softer side when he takes Chris to the hospital for a revolutionary new treatment that might help his condition.

Earlier on in the story, Dr. Deere had seemed to be quite a greedy individual, always demanding that Chris sign over the money. But now he's helping Chris out of the goodness of his heart, and without asking for a single penny in return for his medical expertise.

If it hadn't been for Dr. Deere, Chris would never have been able to interact with the outside world in a way that would prepare him for college. So he has much to be thankful for, and much to be excited about.
