The answer to this question can be found in chapter 13. Sydelle Pulaski is definitely a unique person. Some readers might go so far as to even call her odd. She is someone who has been constantly ignored her entire life, and she is desperate for attention. This leads her to perform odd antics like using crutches that she doesn't need to becoming fixated on odd investigative trains of thought. As an example, Sydelle is convinced that the killer is or has a twin, so she convinces her partner that they should dress as twins to help identify the suspect.
In chapter 13, the residents of the building gather for dinner in the restaurant, and Grace is finding great pleasure in seating the guests in new combinations. One such combination is Sydelle and Chris. The two seem to get along and even start laughing together as they poke fun of the menu options. The text then breaks away from Sydelle and Chris for several pages. When it returns to the two characters, Sydelle is bluntly asking if Chris can walk at all. Chris says that he can't and asks why Sydelle is even asking. Sydelle then conspiratorially tells Chris that his disability gives him an alibi for being the thief or murderer. His wheelchair is the perfect disguise. Chris isn't offended at all. In fact, he enjoys being taken "for the criminal type."
