Student Question
Why does Dad listen to country music in The Watsons Go to Birmingham—1963?
Quick answer:
Dad starts listening to country music by way of a joke as the family drives into Alabama. For good measure, he says, tongue-in-cheek, that he's going to change everyone's names to country names when they get back to Michigan.
Pa and Momma Watson once made each other a solemn promise. If either of them watched The Lawrence Welk Show—an easy-listening music program that was once hugely popular on American TV—or listened to country music, then the other got to have a free divorce.
However, this is easier said than done. Pa believes, somewhat dubiously, it should be said, that if you listen to any kind of music long enough, eventually, you'll get to like it. He clearly doesn't want this to happen in relation to country music. So, as all the radio stations south of Cincinnati will be playing nothing but country music, he figures it's best to take some records with them.
Even so, Pa turns on the radio when the family are entering Alabama and starts listening to country music, which, as expected, is playing on virtually every local radio station. As he taps his hand on the steering wheel, seemingly enjoying the sounds coming from the car radio, Pa starts joking around.
He says that he's thinking about changing everyone's names to country names when they get back to Michigan. He'll be Clem and Kenny will be Homer. He hasn't figured out a name for Momma yet, but instead of taking up an offer for a free divorce, she enters into the spirit of raillery and begins talking in an extreme Southern accent.
