In the first chapter of the book, Bryon and Buphead give Kenny a "test" to make sure he's ready to survive a blizzard. Kenny later realizes that he "should have known that the only reason Buphead and By would want to play with [him] was to do something mean," but at the time, he goes along with their little "test."
First, the two older boys grab Kenny's hands and feet, swinging him between them as they shout that there are "blizzard warnings." They release Kenny so that he lands headfirst in a snowbank. Everyone laughs when Kenny climbs out of the snow, unharmed.
The boys then tell Kenny that he has to learn how to keep his balance in a high wind. They spin him in circles until "slob" starts flying out of his mouth and then push him back into the snowbank.
Kenny is then proclaimed ready for the "final exam." He is reminded to keep his hands up, covering his face, in the event of a blizzard. As Buphead yells about the danger of blowing snow, Kenny hears his brother mumble his name. When he turns around, Byron spits a mouthful of snow into his face, and the older boys start laughing. They tell Kenny that he has failed the test because he forgot to put his hands up to cover his face.
When Kenny later hears Byron mumbling his name again, Kenny tells him that he isn't going to be fooled a second time. However, Byron actually does need his help this time because he has gotten his lips stuck to the mirror of the car.
