Did the entire family return to Flint after the bombing in 'The Watsons Go to Birmingham—1963'?

In the third paragraph of Chapter 15, Kenny says they left Birmingham the night after the bombing, and in the opening scene of that same chapter, Kenny is hiding behind the sofa and mentions that they had been back in Flint for a couple of weeks. At that time Momma and Dad ask if Byron knows where Kenny is hiding, and Kenny also remembers Byron being forced to take him to play basketball with Buphead. Byron is an important influence in Kenny's life in the weeks after the family's return home. I think it is safe to assume that Byron did not spend the summer in Birmingham like he was supposed to.
