On the first day in Waiting for Godot, a boy who works for Godot tells Pozzo and Lucky that Godot won't be coming that day.

We see the exchange in act 1. When the boy first approaches, he appears to be afraid of something. Vladimir gives him leave to draw nearer, but the boy is hesitant.

Meanwhile, Estragon demands to know the reason for the boy's tardy appearance. However, the boy doesn't reply, even though Estragon asks twice. Vladimir defends the boy and tells Estragon to leave him alone.

Estragon ignores Vladimir and continues berating the boy, who protests that his late appearance isn't his fault. He also says that he is afraid. Estragon then demands to know what the boy is afraid of. The boy doesn't answer, and Vladimir mysteriously pronounces that he is afraid of "the others."

Upon further questioning, the boy reveals that he is afraid of being whipped and terrorized by two big men. When Vladimir asks whether the boy knows the men, he answers in the negative.

The boy, however, does admit to being from the region. Estragon, for some inexplicable reason, doesn't believe him. Despite the boy's protestations that he's telling the truth, Estragon continues to doubt him. When Vladimir asks Estragon to explain his strange behavior, the latter claims to be unhappy.

Yet, Estragon says he doesn't remember how long he's been feeling this way. Meanwhile, the boy begins to say something about Godot. Vladimir demands to know whether the boy has come around before.

The boy maintains that he hasn't and that this is the first time he's meeting both Vladimir and Estragon. He continues by giving a message from Godot. He tells Vladimir and Estragon that Godot won't be meeting with the men that day. Instead, Godot will appear the next day.
