‘‘The Veldt’’ explores the theme of humans using technology to commit evil acts. Can you think of any other stories or films that share this theme? Conversely, can you identify any stories or films where technology is utilized for good? If you were to write a similar story, would you depict technology as a force for good or evil? Why?

The early 1950s in the United States was marked by a widespread fear of Communism, known as the Red Scare. Look into the government system called Communism. What are the core principles of this system? Why do you think it was perceived as such a significant threat to the United States during the mid-twentieth century?

In psychoanalysis, individuals' thoughts and emotions are examined to help them resolve issues. What if George had immediately sent Wendy and Peter to a psychoanalyst upon noticing the nursery becoming dangerous? Do you believe the story's outcome would have been different? Why or why not? What do you think Wendy and Peter would have discussed with the psychoanalyst? Write an imaginary dialogue among these three characters.

In his story, Bradbury uses detailed descriptions and similes to immerse the reader in the sensory experience of the African veldt. Research another environmental setting, such as a tropical rainforest or the Arctic tundra. What descriptive words or phrases could effectively convey this environment to a reader? Can you think of some similes that would help the reader truly "feel" the setting? Write a descriptive passage that evokes this sensory experience.
