Rebecca (Becky) Sharp is an intelligent, beautiful, self-centered, and ambitious woman. Her journey begins as an orphan and charity pupil at Miss Pinkerton’s School for girls, evolving through a series of seductions, affairs, and marriages that form the core of the novel's narrative. Becky epitomizes the inhabitants of Vanity Fair, a world dominated by pretense and spectacle. However, she remains somewhat detached from this milieu, as she perceptively recognizes the absurdity of the middle-class English society's pride, wealth, and ambition. Though she is married to Captain Rawdon Crawley, her charm captivates many, including Lord Steyne, until her husband discovers them and departs. Becky's cunning enables her to manipulate those around her, including Miss Briggs, her naïve companion whom she does not repay for loans. Her relationship with her son, Rawdy Crawley, is distant, as she lacks affection for him and leaves him mainly under the care of others.

His perseverance is rewarded when Amelia finally marries him, although he eventually realizes she was not as worthy of his devotion as he had believed.

Rawdon takes a distant post at Coventry Island, where he eventually dies of yellow fever, sending financial support back to Becky and their son.
