"Storking" is a term and a process that appears in Shusterman's book Unwind. It describes the process of leaving your own child on the doorstep of another person's home. This sounds horrible, but it is a consequence of the Unwind agreements that prohibit a person from unwinding a child until that child is a teenager. This means that a person is forced to raise the child. But some people in the world of this novel can't do that, so they abandon the child on the doorstep of somebody else's home. If the person storking the child is not caught in the act, then they are free to abandon the child, and the family that received the storked child is obligated to care for the child. The freedom and right to stork a child is granted by the Storking Initiative.

If they catch her, she's obliged to keep the baby—that's part of the Storking Initiative too—but if they open the door and find nothing but the child, it's "finder's keepers" in the eyes of the law. Whether they want it or not, the baby is legally theirs.

Readers can see the Storking Initiative at work in chapter 9. This chapter describes how a young mother storks her child, and it is this storked baby whom Connor rescues in chapter 11. This is an important moment in Connor's maturing process, because readers get to see that Connor isn't necessarily all about saving only himself. He deeply values life. Risa isn't happy about his actions, because she knows that the child could compromise their escape, but she helps out as well.
