Chapter 24 is an incredibly disturbing chapter to read. It is the chapter that has Roland attempting to rape Risa in the bathroom. Roland has been making moves at Risa for quite some time, and a great deal of his motivation is to anger Connor. In the previous chapters, Risa made that clear to Connor, and Connor is now starting to understand that Roland isn't just a dumb thug like he previously thought. Roland is smart and devious about his plans.
Roland made sure that Connor saw him follow Risa into the bathroom, and Connor heads in there as well. Risa is relieved, but Connor does nothing to stop Roland's advances. Connor washes his hands and asks if Roland would like the lights turned off too. Connor also mentions that Roland is free to do whatever he wants to Risa since Connor and Risa broke up recently. Roland immediately recognizes that raping Risa won't hurt Connor, and it will make Risa an enemy. He leaves knowing that he has a chance to get Risa on his side now. Risa is super angry at Connor for doing nothing, but Connor explains that his inaction has now saved Risa from Roland's antagonism for quite some time. Risa is still very angry and forces Connor to leave. She hates to admit it, but she knows that Connor is right; however, she can't shake the feeling of disappointment in Connor's actions. She doesn't feel that Connor's actions reflected what a hero should do, and it is at that moment that Risa realizes that she views Connor as a hero.
