Bella sits with Edward at lunch the next day, and he spends the rest of the day questioning her about every aspect of her life. Amongst other things, he wants to know if Bella believes she likes him more than he likes her, and then tells her that she couldn’t be more wrong. She tells him that sometimes she feels he is trying to pull away from her and say goodbye, but then stops himself. She also says that she is too ordinary for someone like him; but he tells her she doesn’t see herself clearly if that’s what she thinks. He also tells her that he sometimes wants to say goodbye so that she will be safe and away from him, and if he can do that, it proves he likes her more because it would hurt him to let her go but he would do it to keep her safe. He later invites her to spend the day with him the following Saturday, but to stay around town instead of going to Seattle. She agrees, on the condition that he lets her drive.
Bella asks Edward about his hunting preferences, and he explains that he likes to drink from mountain lions while his brother Edward enjoys wild grizzly bears. She seems shocked, but he explains that vampires have their own weapons, such as super strength and very sharp teeth, to make them an appropriate match for the ferocious beasts. She asks if she can watch him hunt sometime, and he says no, but won’t explain why.
What is the summary of Chapter 11 in Twilight?
In Biology class, the teacher shows a movie, and Bella and Edward both seem to have to exert serious self-control in order to keep from going insane. After class, Edward walks Bella to gym, and allows himself to stroke her cheek one time before leaving her. She feels icy and warm at the same time from his touch.
After school, Bella again probes him for information about his hunting practices, and why he won’t allow her to see him do it. He explains that during the hunt, a vampire loses most of his humanity, and he fears that he would not have the control to keep her safe in such a situation.
After school, Edward continues to question Bella, this time deepening the level of his inquiries. They continue in this manner until it is almost time for Charlie to get home. Edward tells her that it is twilight, which is the safest time of day for vampires, because the night is coming; but it is also sad, because the darkness always comes. As Bella prepares to get out of Edward’s car, Billy Black and Jacob arrive at the Swan household. Knowing that Billy is suspicious of the Cullens, Bella is nervous that he might say something to Charlie. She hadn’t yet decided how to approach the topic of Edward with Charlie, and she doesn’t want to be ratted out by Billy.
What is the summary of Chapter 12 in Twilight?
Bella asks Edward about how his siblings feel about her, and he says that Alice is the most supportive while the rest can’t understand why he can’t leave Bella alone. Edward’s sister, Rosalie, glares at Bella, and he apologizes on her behalf. He tells Bella that his relationship with her could be dangerous if something went wrong. He and his family run the risk of being exposed if anything happens to Bella. Bella understands that she should be frightened by his comment, but all she can do is feel sorry for the conflicts he faces. When she gets out to her car after school, Bella finds a note from Edward, telling her to “be safe.”
The next day, when Edward arrives, Bella reminds him of their deal, and they climb into her truck. When Edward discovers that Bella hasn’t told anyone she will be with him that day, he is upset. He knows now that no one will be able to blame him if she disappears, and he worries that she has taken these measures to protect him. They come to an open meadow in a clearing, and Bella believes it is one of the most beautiful places she has ever seen. She enters the meadow, and then turns around to see that Edward has not followed. She finds him standing at the edge of the clearing, in the shade. She remembers that he had promised her that today would be the day he would show her why he cannot go out in sunlight, and she stares at him curiously. Taking a deep breath, Edward steps into the sunlight.
What is the summary of Chapter 13 in Twilight?
Chapter 13 begins with Edward stepping out into the direct sunlight, and Bella gets to see Edward in a whole new way. His skin begins to shimmer and sparkle, and Bella thinks that he is one of the most beautiful things that she has ever seen.
Edward in the sunlight was shocking. I couldn't get used to it, though I'd been staring at him all afternoon. His skin, despite the faint flush from yesterday's hunting trip, literally sparkled, like thousands of tiny diamonds were embedded in the surface.
Next Bella spends some time caressing his skin, and Edward tells her that it feels wonderful. The narrative eventually gets to a point in which Edward feels the need to explain how and why he is the perfect predator. He then shows Bella how fast and strong he is. Bella continues to swoon over Edward despite being frightened all at the same time.
I sat without moving, more frightened of him than I had ever been. I'd never seen him so completely freed of that carefully cultivated façade. He'd never been less human . . . or more beautiful.
Edward eventually calms down and returns to Bella, and he states that he would never hurt her. She is the most important thing in the world to him. He then makes a terrible comparison about her scent and drugs. Bella is a drug that he can't do without.
"Maybe that's not the right comparison. Maybe it would be too easy to turn down the brandy. Perhaps I should have made our alcoholic a heroin addict instead."
"So what you're saying is, I'm your brand of heroin?" I teased, trying to lighten the mood.
He smiled swiftly, seeming to appreciate my effort. "Yes, you are exactly my brand of heroin."
Edward then goes on to explain what it was like for him the day that Bella entered his life. Bella is completely enraptured and admits that she doesn't want to be anywhere that Edward is not.
I'm here . . . which, roughly translated, means I would rather die than stay away from you.
The chapter finally ends with Edward carrying Bella back to the car at super speed, and then the two of them have a long and passionate kiss.
When Edward comes out into the sunlight, his normally pale skin literally sparkles in the sunshine. Edward explains to Bella that he is a perfect predator, because everything about him draws Bella to him. Then he shows her how fast he can run and how easily he can snap a large branch off of a tree. When she shows some fear over his display, he swears he will not hurt her. He encourages her to go back to touching his hand. He also reminds her to be careful, because he craves more than her company, and he is more dangerous to her than he is to anyone else. When she asks him about this, he says that her scent is more wonderful to him than anyone else’s. He explains that it is like a heroin addict being surrounded by his favorite brand of heroin. Bella asks if this is a common experience for vampires, and he explains that it is very rare, and has never happened to him before he met Bella.
What is the summary of Chapter 14 in Twilight?
Bella asks Edward how old he is, and he tells her that he was born in 1901 and made vampire in 1918. His parents had died of the Spanish Influenza, and he was near death, so Carlisle brought him over. He will not tell her how to change a human to a vampire, but he does tell her that it's a very painful process. He tells her that Carlisle changed Esme after she fell off a cliff, and then Rosalie. Rosalie found Emmett and asked Carlisle to change him for her, and Alice and Jasper came on their own later.
Then Edward says that Alice's special talent is that she can see things that will happen in the future. Later he explains that Jasper can alter the moods of those around him. He says there are other vampires, but most are not "vegetarian" and live nomad lifestyles.
Edward admits to Bella that he has spied on her before, and watched her sleep almost every night. He says he has heard her say his name in her dreams, which is the first time he decided to be with her. He stays with her again that night. Bella asks him if vampire marriages are similar to human marriages in every way, and he says that yes they are. He also explains that it would be impossible for them to be as close as married people are, because he might break her. Then he tells her he has never felt this way about anyone else, and she agrees. He sings her to sleep.
What is the summary of Chapter 15 in Twilight?
In chapter 15, Bella wakes up and sees that Edward is still there. He tells her that Charlie left an hour earlier and disconnected her battery cables, apparently trying to keep her at home in case she snuck out. She gets ready in the bathroom. When she comes back, she notices that Edward is wearing different clothes than he had been the night before. He says that he left while she was in a deep sleep. He further reports that she was talking in her sleep and that she said that she loved him. He tells her this was nice to hear (even though he already knew it). She says it again, and he tells her that she is his life. While she is eating, Edward suggests that she should meet his family. When she asks how much his knows, he tells her that keeping secrets in his family does not work and lets her know that they are expecting to meet her. Bella asks Edward if Alice saw her coming and he does not really answer. Then he tells her that he thinks she should introduce him to Charlie as her boyfriend. She finishes getting ready and Edward tells her how nice she looks. He kisses her, which makes her collapse. She tells him that it is different from before.
They continue with the visit. Edward takes Bella to his house and she is impressed by how beautiful the house is, both inside and out. Dr. Carlisle Cullen and Esme Cullen are there and both are very friendly. Jasper is not so friendly. Even though she took lessons when she was young, Bella says she can’t play and asks Edward to play for her, and he does so beautifully. Everyone else leaves. They talk about why Rosalie and Emmett are not around. Rosalie is jealous of Bella for being human, while Emmet likes her but thinks Edward is crazy. Jasper is staying away because Edward told him to. Esme and Carlisle just want him to be happy, and Alice (who is very enthusiastic) just has her own way of looking at things.
He shows her the rest of the house, including a huge cross. She is surprised. Edward explains that it came from the church of Carlisle’s father who was an Anglican pastor. She learns Carlisle was born in London in the 1640s. His father persecuted Roman Catholics and hunted witches, werewolves and vampires. Carlisle found a coven of real vampires and became one, then hid from his father so he would not kill him.
What is the summary of Chapter 16 in Twilight?
Edward, continuing the tour, brings Bella to Carlisle's office. Edward shows Bella a wall of paintings. One depicts 1650's London, where Carlisle grew up and was turned into a vampire. Edward tells Bella how, at first, Carlisle tried to kill himself unsuccessfully before realizing he could survive off of animals. So he began following this new philosophy. He became a scholar and swam to France (a fact that is very disconcerting to Bella, who discovers that vampires are not only good swimmers, but they do not need to breathe). In France, Carlisle found other vampires, Aro, Marcus, and Caius, "nighttime patrons of the arts." He lived with them for awhile, but their philosophies on diet clashed, and he left, going to Chicago to practice medicine where he found Edward dying of the Spanish Flu Epidemic of 1918. Edward explains that he has almost always been with Carlisle, but there was a short time where he "rebelled" from Carlisle's diet. Bella is nonplussed, and Edward explains his line of thinking at the time: he thought that because he could read the minds of his prey, he could be selective in who he killed. But he soon felt like a monster and returned home. Next Edward takes Bella to his room, with large windows and a wall of cds. Edward admits that he is so happy to be able to tell Bella everything. As there are fooling around in his room, Alice and Jasper come to tell them that they are going to play baseball during a storm. Bella is curious, and willing to go along.
