When Miles announces that he will get his uncle to come down to Bly, the governess stops outside the church and cannot go in. She concludes that Miles knows that his uncle has forbidden her to contact him about the children and that she is honoring that request, despite the troubling incidents at the house, in order to gain a better standing in his eyes. She is shaken at this revelation of the depths of manipulation to which Miles will sink. Her opinion that he is doing this in order to force her to send him back to a school for the purpose of his gaining more freedom from the company of women (despite his professed adoration of her).
