I. Vocabulary: Define the following terms.

  • balmy
  • trod
  • tangent
  • ambled
  • bovine

II. Questions for Review: Answer in complete sentences. You should use references from the text to support each answer.

  • On the first page, the author tells us that during the dog-days of summer, “people are led to do things they are sure to be sorry for after” (p. 3). What kinds of things do you think people might do in the summer that they would regret later?
  • Why do you think the woods would be the “hub of the wheel” for this story? (see page 4).
  • How does the road seem to feel about the woods? How do you know?
  • Make a prediction: On page 6, we learn that, “the village doesn’t matter, except for the jailhouse and the gallows.” Why do you think those might be important places in the story?
  • Why would someone want to throw a rock at the Foster house? Why would they want to pass by the woods silently?
  • On page 7 it says, “nothing ever seems interesting when it belongs to you – only when it doesn’t.” Give an example of a time this has been true in your life.
  • Make a prediction: Why would it have been a disaster if people had gone into the woods and found the spring of water?
