Student Question
Why did the doctor move his men to the stockade in Treasure Island?
Quick answer:
The doctor moves his men to the stockade for strategic defense. The stockade offers a strong log wall, a blockhouse with loopholes for shooting, and a reliable spring for fresh water, making it easier to defend against attacks and sustain the group than staying on the ship.
Basically, he decides to move from the ship to the stockade because it seems to him that it would be really easy to defend the stockade from an attack. It would also be easy to hold out for a long time in there.
The stockade has a lot of stuff going for it:
- It's got a strong log wall (palings)
- It's got a good blockhouse with loopholes to shoot out of -- they can shoot anyone coming over the wall.
- It's got a good spring for fresh water -- this is why it's so much better than staying on the ship.
