In chapter 23, Jim struggles to row the tiny boat out to the pirate ship, but he is eventually successful. The ship is being guarded by only two men, and they are drunk and arguing. They do not notice Jim or any of the cutting. Jim successfully frees the anchor, and the pirate ship begins floating with the current. The two pirates eventually notice that something isn't right, but Jim is able to stay hidden. His escape is a bit hampered by his poor ability to row well and the strong currents. He eventually just falls asleep in Ben Gunn's small boat.
