Student Question
In Treasure Island, what actions do Squire Trelawney and Dr. Livesey take after seeing the treasure map?
Quick answer:
After seeing the treasure map, Squire Trelawney and Dr. Livesey immediately decide to pursue the treasure. They plan to outfit a ship in Bristol for a voyage to the island where the treasure is believed to be hidden. Squire Trelawney undertakes the financial responsibilities for the expedition, while Dr. Livesey, a former Naval physician, agrees to serve as the ship's doctor. They are joined by young Jim Hawkins, who originally found the map.
I believe the adventure-minded duo probably saw dollar signs (or, more appropriately, guineas and pounds) in their eyes once they took a look at Billy Bones' map in Robert Louis Stevenson's fabulous pirate novel, Treasure Island. They immediately made plans to outfit a ship in Bristol and sail to the unnamed island (probably in the Caribbean). Squire Trelawney certainly didn't need the money, but he seemed like a bored landowner still yearning for the sea, so he undertook the financial endeavors necessary for the voyage. Dr. Livesey, a former Naval physician, signed on as ship's doctor; and young Jim Hawkins, who first acquired Billy Bones' chest that contained the map, was allowed to accompany them--luckily for the squire and the doctor.
I think that the part that you are asking about is in Chapter 6 "The Captain's Papers." In that chapter, the squire and the doctor look at the treasure map for the first time. As soon as they have seen it, they say that they are going to go after the treasure.
In the chapter, the squire tells the doctor that he should drop his practice immediately and they should head for Bristol and find themselves a ship. They really get pretty excited and start talking about who their crew should be and other such plans.
