The content of Traveling Mercies: Some Thoughts on Faith is exactly as the title suggests: a collection of thoughts, using everyday examples, on faith, by critically acclaimed writer Anne Lamott. The way Lamott practices her Christian faith is quite simplistic and could be considered casual. She is faithful to her beliefs and is conscious of godly presence in her everyday life, but she practices that faith as if it is a normal aspect of daily existence. She has admitted that her two favorite prayers are simply "help me" and "thank you."

Showing one's vulnerability and dependence on God also shows complete faith in a deity that ultimately controls the universe. This is the ultimate sign of trust for Lamott. Likewise, when she remembers to be grateful for her blessings each day, Lamott believes that more positive outcomes open up in her life. Being thankful for divine blessings also humbles her.

One of the most unique aspects of Traveling Mercies, which differentiates it from her other successful works, is that Lamott introduces various people from her life. From her son to her best friend, a wide range of real people in the book offer multiple perspectives on faith. Lamott shows that each person is unique; therefore, their ways of praising God are also unique.

Ultimately, Lamott's aim with the book is to show that each person has their own unique journey in life. Despite presenting a variety of voices in this book, Lamott herself relates her own personal story. She ponders what makes her faith strong and realizes that her faith was developed over time—through struggles, tribulations, and even battles with her beliefs. She did not receive a single profound insight that instantaneously made her a strong Christian. By presenting her personal struggles in life, she is able to provide advice to readers regarding matters of self-improvement and developing a stronger faith in God.
