Since his return to the island, Cole has been going for regular soaks in the cold water of the pond. Edwin instructs him to do this as a way to soak the anger out of him. In the final chapter, Peter tells Cole that he will join him at the pond. Although Peter has been angry and antagonistic towards Cole, his ill feelings seem to have become more tempered in recent days.

However, when they get to the pond, Peter unleashes on Cole. He tells Cole that there is no way he would ever be able to forgive him. Cole remains calm and tells Peter that his feelings are completely understandable. Peter is further enraged and starts violently attacking Cole. Despite the beating that he receives, Cole remains passive and simply takes Peter's blows. Peter is further angered by Cole's passivity and starts hitting him even harder. Cole implores Peter to stop, but Peter is too angry. All the pent up rage he has is being directed at Cole at this moment.

Eventually, Peter stops and falls over in tears. As Cole hugs Peter, the Spirit Bear appears. Cole assures Peter that the Spirit Bear will not hurt them. A few moments later the bear leaves. This peaceful appearance of the bear indicates that Peter is on the path towards healing and forgiveness. After this, the two boys take their soak in the pond.
