Mann’s works almost plunder his family and circle of acquaintances for their plots, settings, and characterizations. Tonio is the fastidious Mann, and Mann’s merchant grandfather, father, and mother appear in the descriptions of Tonio’s parents. Mann left Lubeck to live in Munich after his father’s death just as Tonio leaves his northern town for the Bavarian capital. Mann felt a deep attachment for a school friend named Armin Martens, Tonio’s Hans Hansen.

This intensely personal autobiographical style did not endear Mann to many Lubeck residents, who recognized themselves in his works (or believed they did), and often resented how they appeared. Indeed, it was with the same anxiety that Tonio experienced that Mann revisited the town of his youth when a successful author.
