Miss Rachel Haverford lives next door to the Finch family in To Kill a Mockingbird. Her nephew, Charles Baker "Dill" Harris, comes to stay with her each summer. She does not appear often in the novel (and she is left out of the film version entirely), primarily serving as the adult supervision for Dill. No age or description of her is given in the book. Jem and Scout first met Dill when they went into Miss Rachel's collard patch looking for her rat terrier; instead, they found Dill squatting among the greens. Miss Rachel picks up Dill each summer at the Maycomb Junction train station in the town's only taxi, and he tolerates his aunt, primarily because he enjoys spending his time away from school with Jem and Scout. Miss Rachel has a fishpool in her back yard where the children sometimes congregate. She becomes upset with Dill on the night when Jem loses his pants, and

"... she went off like the town fire siren. "Do-o-o Jee-sus, Dill Harris! Gamblin' by my fishpool? I'll strip-poker you, sir!"

When Dill runs away from his home in Meridian, Mississippi and ends up under Scout's bed,

     ... Miss Rachel's Do-o-o Je-sus went off in the hall...
     He bore with fortitude her Wait Till I Get You Home, Your Folks Are Out Of Their Minds Worryin', was quite calm during That's All the Harris in You Coming Out, smiled at her Reckon You Can Stay One Night, and returned the hug at long last bestowed upon him.

Miss Rachel was not as supportive of Atticus' decision to defend Tom Robinson, telling Dill that

... if a man like Atticus Finch wants to butt his head against a stone wall it's his head.

According to Dill, Miss Rachel enjoys a little nip after a good night's sleep.

"Bet that woman drinks a pint for breakfast every morning--know she drinks two glasses full. Seen her."
