Short Answer: Simon Finch was a Methodist.

In chapter one, Scout provides the reader with insight into her family's background and says that her ancestor, Simon Finch, was a Methodist, who fled religious persecution in England and immigrated to America. According to Scout, Simon Finch was a successful fur trapper and apothecary in Cornwall, England, before he immigrated to Philadelphia. In America, Simon Finch made his money practicing medicine before purchasing three enslaved people and establishing a homestead on the Alabama River about forty miles above St. Stephens. Simon Finch named his self-sufficient homestead Finch's Landing. Scout mentions that Simon Finch acquired his wealth selling cotton but quickly lost his fortune following the Civil War. Despite losing much of his wealth, Finch's Landing was passed down to his descendants, and this is where Aunt Alexandra resides.
