In Chapter 14, Scout ends up getting into a fight with Jem after he threatens to spank her. Shortly after their scuffle, Atticus tells them to go to bed. As Scout is getting into her bed, she steps on something warm and rather smooth. She then flicks on her bedroom light to look at what she stepped on but sees nothing. Scout then knocks on Jem's door and asks him to take a look under her bed. Scout tells her brother that she thinks that she stepped on a snake. Jem then heads to the kitchen to fetch a broom to inspect underneath Scout's bed. When he returns, Jem swipes several times under the bed, and they hear something grunt. Suddenly, Dill crawls out from underneath Scout's bed. Dill proceeds to tell Jem and Scout how he ran away from home and had been hiding underneath Scout's bed for two hours.
