Celaena Sardothien is the main character, who is eighteen at the time of the story. She was an orphan who was trained to be an assassin and was known to be the best. However, she was betrayed at a young age and was enslaved in the salt mines. She is offered the chance to compete to become the king’s assassin. She chooses to participate and win back her freedom.

Prince Dorian Havilliard is the prince of Adarlan. He is romantically interested in Celaena and tries to win her affection. He is under the control of the king. He tries to defy him, especially in regard to Celaena. However, it becomes clear that he has little control.

Princess Nehemia Ytger is the princess of Eyllwe. She uses a staff that was made by her kingdom to defend herself.

Chaol Westfall is the Captain of the Guard. He is best friends with Dorian. He has a short affair with Celaena.

Kaltain Rompier is a young woman after Prince Dorian and the throne.

Nox Owen becomes friends with Celaena. He is also in the king’s competition and trains with Celaena.
