When Greg returns to Skardu, he is stunned by the ubiquitous presence of the Wahhabi, a “conservative, fundamentalist offshoot of Sunni Islam” and the Saudi rulers’ official religion. The oil money has been used to build both walled madrassas (radical extremist schools of Islam) and mosques in an attempt to proselytize poor, young students and indoctrinate them into this religious and political way of thinking. Estimates of the number of such mosques, schools, and Islamic centers built in 2000 range from 1,100 to 3,800 at a cost of up to $45 million.
