Laila is one of the two main characters in Khaled Hosseini's second novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns. She grows up in the same neighborhood as Mariam and Rasheed, who she will later come to know much more closely when she becomes older. Laila's parents are Babi, an educated man and former school teacher; and Fariba, who also goes by the name of "Mammy." The soft-spoken Babi and Fariba often fight, primarily because of the mother's depressed state: Her sons, Ahmad and Noor, are away from home fighting in the war, and she constantly worries about them.
