In "There Will Come Soft Rains," what is the fifth spot on the house beside mother, father, son, and daughter?

This is one of those questions that can be answered from a close reading of the text.  If you look in the paragraph where it describes the actual figures of the family on the wall, it says right at the end,

"The five spots of paint—the man, the woman, the children, the ball—remained."

The boy and the girl had been playing catch with a ball, and so the fifth spot was the ball, mid-flight, being tossed from the boy to the girl.  It is terrifying to think of the flash, the bomb, or the intense power that would freeze a ball mid-throw, torching it as it sailed across the sky.  I hope that response helps a bit; if you haven't read the story yet, I recommend it.  It's short and really interesting.  Good luck!
