The entire western side of the house is completely black, except for the outlines of their bodies, which are now white silhouettes. There are silhouettes of two children playing catch with a ball, a man mowing the grass, and a woman bent over picking flowers. During the explosion, the members of the family were disintegrated, and the entire city was flattened. No human survived the devastating explosion.
The only building not destroyed during the nuclear attack is the technologically advanced home that remains standing and continues to function as if nothing happened. The family's dog also survives the initial blast but soon succumbs to radiation poisoning and dies inside the empty house. The automated, computerized home continues to perform its daily routines until a tree falls into the kitchen, sparking a destructive house fire. By the end of the story, the only remnant of civilization is an upright wall standing in a heap of rubble and debris.
