Student Question
Justify the statement, "Baldeo was a brave man."
Quick answer:
Baldeo's bravery is evident in his role as a night watchman in India's jungle, a job fraught with danger from wild animals like tigers and leopards. Despite the risks, he courageously took on the job, armed only with an axe. His bravery was further demonstrated when he faced a tiger attack, choosing to fight rather than flee. Although he ultimately succumbed to his injuries, his willingness to confront the tiger highlights his courage.
Baldeo worked as a night watchman for the railroad company. His post was located in the precinct of India’s jungle forest. The work was highly risky given the existence of dangerous animals within the jungle. Baldeo had to contend with the possibility of encountering tigers, bears, leopards, and kraits in his line of duty. To improve his odds of survival while carrying out his night duties, he carried an axe which he knew how to wield. Taking up the job was in itself a display of considerable courage given the risk he was exposing himself to.
His courage was however tested one night when he was accosted by a marauding tiger. He decided to face the tiger because he stood no chance of outrunning the beast in the dark. The tiger attacked and he defended himself with the axe. Unfortunately, he was disarmed when the axe got stuck in the tiger’s shoulder bone. Baldeo succumbed shortly due to injuries inflicted on him by the tiger.
