Pribby wakes up too early and has to fuss with her hens until she knows Adams has left for work at the Big House. She walks to his farm, checking every tree trunk along the way for carved hearts, but she finds none. For two hours Pribby washes, waxes, and cleans but finds nothing. Just as she is beginning to despair, she thinks about books and begins to clap them open and shut to see if anything falls out. Nothing does.
