Student Question

What are the problem, climax, and resolution in "The Graveyard Book"?

Quick answer:

The main problem in "The Graveyard Book" is Bod's kidnapping when trying to pawn a brooch and the threat from Jack, who intends to kill him as he did Bod's family. The climax occurs when Bod confronts and ultimately kills Jack, resolving the primary conflict. Additionally, Bod's struggle to belong neither fully to the world of the living nor the dead is an ongoing theme throughout the story.

I would say the main conflict is when  Bod gets kidnapped when trying to take the brooch to a pawn shop to buy a headstone for a girl burned as a witch.  Another conflict is that Jack was supposed to kill the entire family, including the baby.  Finally, Bod can engage fully in neither the world of the living nor the dead.  The conflict is resolved when Bod kills Jack.
