How does the plot of "The Gathering" by Anne Enright reveal the characters and theme?

The story is mostly told in flashback, and the plot is a little convoluted.  We do learn that the family was a bit messed up, and this caused a suicide.  The suicide was related to a mother's mental breakdown, because her children were sent away to live with their grandmother where they were in turn abused.
