In Chapter 5, Byron and Mark head to the hospital to visit their mother again and Bryon goes down to the snack bar to talk to Cathy. While Bryon is staring at Cathy, he begins to compare her to Angela and admits that he never really "liked" Angela. Bryon also mentions that Cathy was a confident girl who liked him, but he wanted her "to be crazy" about him because he is very egotistical. Cathy then asks Bryon to guess who called her last night. She tells Byron that Ponyboy Curtis called and asked her to go out Friday night. Bryon is upset and thinks about murdering Ponyboy for asking Cathy out. Fortunately for Bryon, Cathy is more interested in him than she is in Ponyboy and ends up telling Ponyboy that she is busy. Later on in the novel, after Bryon and Cathy breakup, Cathy ends up dating Ponyboy Curtis.
