Student Question

In The Tempest, where is Miranda's mother?

Quick answer:

Miranda's mother is presumed to have died before Prospero and Miranda were set adrift at sea. Miranda was only three years old at the time and has no memories of her mother, only faint images of the women who attended her. There is no mention of her mother in her recollections or in the play, suggesting her absence or death prior to these events.

I think we can assume that Miranda's mother died before Prospero and Miranda were set adrift at sea by his evil brother, Alonso, and the usurping Duke of Milan, Antonio.  Miranda has no memories of her life in Milan (she was only three when they were put into the boat) besides faint images of the women who attended her - no mention of a mother.
