After moving from Houston to Florida, Paul and Erik, who are brothers, both start playing sports. Paul chooses to play soccer, and Erik chooses to play football. Their parents are football fans, and so Erik's games and skills get way more parental attention and approval than Paul's do, even though Paul is a pretty talented soccer player. This makes Paul, the younger brother, feel like he's less important in his parent's eyes, and this makes him sad. It doesn't help that he also thinks that Erik was involved in something horrible that happened to him at the house in Houston but that he can't quite seem to remember—or that Erik beats him up on a regular basis, especially in front of his friends.
