Street of Riches depicts the coming of age of a Canadian girl named Christine, the youngest child of her family. She witnesses the growing pains and growing up of many of her older sisters as well as the bumpy, at times, relationship between her mother and father. Because of her youth, especially at the beginning of the text, Christine is unable to understand much of what her family members are feeling, though, as she grows, she becomes more adept at decoding what the older girls and women experience. One sister becomes a nun, another contracts a fever which leaves her with brain damage that develops until she can no longer recognize her family, and still another marries a man of which her parents do not approve—Christine and her mother actually go to try to stop the wedding. Christine learns a great deal about life from her mother's desire for freedom and the subsequent trip that the pair take together, which they take without Christine's father's knowledge (or permission). She begins to leave play behind her and undertakes the difficult process of becoming a woman in the world, as well as a writer. Christine seems to be loosely based on the author herself, and her descriptions of her own and others' complex feelings about life and love are nuanced and poignant.
