The Story of My Life is worth reading primarily because it is a compelling account of one woman's triumph against the odds. Helen is both blind and deaf, a condition which at that time would typically have been treated—if that's the right word—by throwing the patient into an institution, where their needs would not have been adequately met. As well as being cruel, such a procedure would not have yielded much of a story.

It is only because Helen's parents had the foresight and the compassion to engage the services of Annie Sullivan that Helen's story could be told in all its fascinating detail. The Story of My Life by Helen Keller is not a novel as it is an autobiographical account of her life up until age 22. It may seem like a novel because of the intense drama and, for many people, the familiarity with the movie or televised versions of the blind, deaf and mute Helen Keller.

Helen's life is dramatic and almost unbelievable as the odds are stacked against her after the illness that almost killed her when she was a baby. Often stories with such passionate characters who go through almost insurmountable challenges but still manage to achieve can seem unrealistic.

There can be no denying the true life story of Helen Keller however which is not contrived but a story of Helen's determination, the support of a group of inspirational people in their own right and the endless possibilities that are available if a person has the resolve.

The Story of My Life can therefore serve as a reminder that anything is possible. It is motivational for other disabled persons and  actually and maybe even more so it can inspire those who are not disabled but who may allow their difficulties to overpower them. Helen's purpose will surely help others to achieve beyond expectations.
