Helen Keller's writing style is very hard for students today to read and appreciate. I taught the story to gifted sixth graders, and they struggled with the vocabulary and lack of action. This is a good book to help develop reading skills required in advanced literature in high school when they read the classics. If you want a simpler version, try The Miracle Worker written by Anne Sullivan, her teacher. It is less introspective, looking inside on one's self and analyzing the events that affected the growth and development of one's character. The movie and the play were based on this work as well.
