The key to the four teenagers’s creative process as depicted in Spare Parts is thinking outside the box. Innovation in technology or business depends on looking at a problem in a different way, not on following established paths. The outsider status of the four young people is an asset to their attitudes toward developing a new robot, as they were already in a position of looking at a situation from a different perspective.

Language is one important part of the learning process and the creative process. The children were already in a position of learning a new language; this gave them experience that they could apply to coding. As they were used to living on limited resources, their resourcefulness in finding materials was already an established practice in other areas of their lives. Their high motivation to succeed in part stemmed from their strong desire to prove the naysayers wrong.
