Summary
Similar to many of Voigt's novels, A Solitary Blue explores the themes of love and trust. The story follows Jeff Greene as he grows from seven to sixteen years old. The narrative begins on the day he returns from school to discover his mother has left him and his father. It concludes years later when Jeff, having inherited his wealthy great-grandmother's estate, turns away from his deceitful mother's attempts to reconnect. Throughout the story, Jeff learns to overcome the insecurity caused by his mother's abandonment, his father's apparent indifference, and the neglect from a series of live-in housekeepers and sitters. His journey to accept his challenging childhood showcases the individual's capacity to learn from and overcome painful experiences. Despite its challenges, Jeff's psychological journey is captivating, and the lessons he learns about the true nature of love and resilience are both valuable and convincing.
